Rich Twin, Poor Twin

There were two identical twins. They looked alike, talked alike, thought alike, and acted alike. They were good students and excelled in school. They were accepted into prestigious universities. Although they did not know how or what they needed to go through to graduate in four years, they kept working toward that goal. They eventually graduated with advanced degrees and went on to start careers in their chosen professions. The twins each decided to work for big name companies and were quite pleased with their starting salaries and generous benefits. Their hard work for those advanced degrees had paid off. Their future looked bright. Their family was proud that they had graduated from prodigious universities and that they were starting their careers working for well established companies.
Many years later, one twin managed to climb the corporate ladder. He had a huge office, an even bigger salary, and the responsibility of managing an entire sector of the company. The other twin never climbed his company’s ladder. He stayed low key and only took on enough responsibility only to keep from being fired. Don’t get me wrong, he always did an exceptional job on the work he was given, but he never asked for extra work. His salary did not increase much from the day he started working, but he did not mind because his job, tasks, and responsibilities didn’t change much as well. This “lazy” twin planned to retire by the age of 35 while the other twin who was high up in the company never even had time to think about retirement.

This is a story of how one twin choose to be Rich. Although both twins had almost identical salaries and had come from the same upbringing and education their whole lives, one twin choose to be Rich. The rich twin is the one that chose not to climb the corporate ladder. Instead, he created his own. While his twin was busy working harder, getting promotions and spending, rich twin was busy learning how to be financially free. The poor one spoke with words like “secure job”, “promotions”, “tax breaks” and “401K”, while the rich twin was always speaking with words like “ What is my ROI?” , “Bottom line it what is the cap rate?”, “Positive cashflow? Then we will take the debt.”

When rich twin first started working, he questioned how he ended up where he was. All his life, he was told to study hard, get good grades, and find a secure high paying job. But then what? Who’s goal was that? That was never his childhood goal – nobody’s childhood goal is to work hard for and make someone else rich for the rest of their life. After he made the conscious decision to be rich, although he did not know how he was going to do it, he knew he could reach his goal if he just kept working toward it – just like how he had accomplished all the other goals in his life.
