Milliondollartwins.com was started back in 2005. That was about the time when my twin and I were working in our corporate jobs as Electrical Engineers and trying to make our first million dollars. We started the site after we found TheMilliondollarhomepage. We were inspired not so much by the “product” itself which was just an ad board, but by the blog and the guy behind the site. So much so that we DECIDED, committed to, and told everyone that we too were going to be millionaires. I remember buying the domain and writing my first post on the site. We made static html pages and wrote that we wanted to become millionaires within 5 years and that it was one of our Main goals. Of course there was not much traffic to the site and some of the people who visited just commented that it was a pipe dream, to give up, or maybe in 30 years through saving and investing in real-estate, stick to your day-jobs, etc ,etc. The site was taken down about 4 months later but the goal was still with us. Here we were, highly educated Engineers with no real knowledge of money and how to make money online, but we chose to continue. Surprisingly, we did not become millionaires in 5 years. It took us 3 years to make our first million dollars. Fast forward to today, we have made millions in revenue again and again several times. In the back of our minds we always wanted to go back to that site to prove to the naysayers that a powerful committed decision can achieve the perceived Impossible. We even started a new blog – richtwinpoortwin.com to document our journey – which had plenty of highs and lows. We took screenshots and videos along the way but did not see how valuable the lessons we learned along the way are.

Lessons From 2007

2007 – what a crazy year. We started the year out strong; our passive income was around 5 times our salaries as professional electrical engineers. As I mentioned in my previous post, the real spark that made this into a reality was through constant visualization of what we wanted and keeping our goals in our minds. Once you do that, you will start making decisions small and large in tune with the path to getting whatever it is you want. One of the first actions that we took (that we thought was small and insignificant at the time) was to model our adsense placement from high trafficked sites and from bloggers talking about how much they earned with adsense. Even though it was a small action and we SHOULD have done it years ago, it really never occurred to us to JUST DO IT until we were hungry enough to increase our passive income. You see, it’s really not how hard you work but the effectiveness of your actions and decisions in reaching your goals. And a lot of those actions and decisions are actually governed by your sub consciousness and uncontrollable events and people that are attracted to you.

Things were going well and it was almost a routine. We did our 9-5, came home, checked our stats and worked on our sites for an hour or two every night. We were at the point where we were deciding and planning on how and when to quit our day jobs – our professional careers, something that we were trained for much of our lives. But something always kept us back. Our jobs were actually pretty cushy and relaxing compared to some we knew about from our friends and family. Then the unthinkable happened – we got banned from adsense which was the majority of our online passive income at the time. Can you imagine? Getting a steady $x,xxx per day in passive income to almost NOTHING? To say the least we were hurt – bad. It was not even about the money, it was the questioning, the unknown of what to do now? How can we get back the income we were generating from our business?

This was around June and for about 2 whole months we were depressed. I have never been depressed like that in my LIFE. It is the sort of thing you only read about and yes the symptoms written about it are true – loss of appetite, deep sadness, weight loss, etc. I did not want to talk to anyone, reply to any emails, or do anything. I just did my 9-5, came home, and slept.

The first thing we did was try to work hard to fix it. To find an alternative – what a waste of time. Life was just telling us to move on. We went outside every day after work and just ran and really asked ourselves what it is we wanted and what it was we “had” when we were banking with adsense. You know what? We found out that we still had it and always will have it. It’s the ability to create anything we wanted, feeling free, being free, being grateful, and just enjoying life – Knowing that somehow someway we were going to make it.

Within 5 months from the day we lost almost everything, we were able to bring our passive income streams back to where they were and more and quit our day jobs. From this experience, I know that in order to be rich, I must be grateful, humble, enjoy life, never give up, and respect others – in other words I need to keep learning, growing, and becoming a better person.

Making Money Online Part I

I keep getting all these questions about how to make money online. Well to tell you the truth if I had to start all over again I would start by targeting a niche that I am passionate about and monetize it with AdSense – Yes Adsense. There is still a ton of money in Adsense regardless of what anyone says or what you hear. I know this is a fact. I bet you its probably easier and more profitable than ever right now. Google has implemented click fraud prevention, is still the top contexual advertising network serving very relevant ads and has added a couple of new features. I keep getting stories of how other people got their adsense accounts banned and even on Christmas Day which sucks but there are simple and effective ways to prevent your account from being banned.

1. The number one rule is this -never tell anyone (not even your family or friends or co-workers) about your sites or about AdSense.

2. Install Asrep or a similar click monitoring program to monitor your adsense clicks after you get a around $10 a day adsense earnings or even sooner if you told people about your sites with adsense. I know people who are already getting click frauded when their adsense earnings are just around $20 a day. No Joke. I highly recommend setting your Asrep to send you an email alert for 6 clicks in one hour with the same IP. Whenever you receive a click fraud alert, contact Google immediately that you have a click fraud monitor program and alert them of the suspicious activity and that you can provide the log if they require it. I have heard that Google does not reply to these emails sometime but they do take off the invalid clicks from your account and deduct the invalid earnings. Once you start hitting over $100 a day, I recommend getting another copy of asrep or installing it on a separate server because the logs and processing gets really big and hard to handle on a shared server. At our prime we were getting over 30K adsense clicks a day. At this level you should really think about getting a dedicated person or management service to monitor your account. Also you may be contacted by an Adsense representative who will try to “help” you. Try to stay in at least weekly contact with this Google adsense Representative and tell him all your sites and where you get your traffic from. Also tell him your goals with your sites and adsense.

3. NEVER log into your Adsense account on a PC that you do not own and never log in when you are not at your “home” ip. The home ip is the address you created the account on and where you usually check your stats. NEVER log in when you are at work.

4. DO not create another Adsense account. DO not create a LLC or company just to get another adsense account. Having multiple adsense accounts just gives you a FALSE sense of security. Google knows everything you are doing and can tie accounts together in a click of a button. If they link 1 account to click fraud, ALL of your accounts will be disabled. Regardless of whether or not they are owned and operated by different corporations or individuals.

5. Read the TOS and keep up to date with the changes.

6. If you are new to Adsense, the best adsense ads to use are 336×280 box ads near the Top- Left of your sites with the colors blended to match your site.  You can try other ad types but I found that these box ads have the highest CTRs and brought in about 40% of the total adsense revenue.

7. In order to really make it big with adsense you need a lot of pages in your site. Your site also needs to be themed and all of the pages need to be optimized for adsense revenue (high ctr was what we focused on). In the beginning it was very easy to get top search rankings for almost any keyword and theme. It is tougher now but can still be done.

8. Theming was key for our sites because they make your visitors “stick” and read multiple pages and subsequently click on multiple ads. It also helps for them to add to favorites for future browsing and research and of course more revenue. A simple left menu with navigation to all the top themes of our site and sometimes display of sub topic is what we find to be the most effective. Ads on the right and on the bottom get very low ctrs and are best for CPM ads to maximize for revenue.

9. When buying domains, spend the extra cash to make them private. Host them on a shared servers so that whenever someone does a reverse ip check they see a bunch of shared sites and most of them will not be yours. This will prevent haters from seeing all your sites. I highly recommend Hostgator for your server hosting. At the “baby” level it’s just $7.95 and currently a coupon code “snowman” will give you 20% off. This server package can be used to host all your sites – it allows for unlimited domain names. I think it’s a real bargin.

 10. Never give up. Making money with adsense if the easiest monetization method open to almost everyone right now. If you do not learn how to make money with adsense, you’ll find the other methods to be even more difficult.

Common Reader Question

Here is a common question from those who start blogs and want to monetize them correctly. We haven’t really tried to monetize this blog but think that the same monetization methods work for blogs as in any website. Here is the question from Thuy

“I guess my question to you is do you consider 6 months too much time to waste on building traffic to a single site? How long did it take you to generate money? Do you think that I should consider this sports blog of mine to be a failure? Should I move onto the next idea and scrap this one?”

The good thing is that you are taking action. A lot of people know all of this or are constantly searching for the How-to’s to make money online but they really do not take action.
From my experience, you probably learned a lot from that one site. Honestly, a site is never finished and should always be improved for traffic, content, etc. I think that you can see that you really can not “get rich” by working hard yourself – you need to leverage your time and money – If you want the blog updated often, have you considered finding a writer for it? I know that writing content takes a lot of time – at least for us. It looks like your traffic generation method is ineffective also or not producing the results you want. Have you tried link exchanges? paying for traffic? contests? there are many ways to generate traffic but it is vital to do so. PPC or pay per click is one of the most effective method of generating targeted traffic. If you do not have an Adwords and YSM account yet, go get them.
After you have traffic, you can monetize the traffic with different methods like adsense, ypn, affiliate promotions, selling your own product (test by selling on ebay first and gathering email contacts from your blog telling them of your planned product and check the buying potential). The most profitable and stable monetization method is having your own products to sell because you control almost everything – however you need to deal with customer service, product creation, branding, etc – you need a team to help basically. The other monetization method that is probably more profitable and stable is selling private ads on your blog. The easiest monetization method in my opinion is Adsense and CPM ads from sites like ValueClickMedia.com which pays per 1000 impressions – however, the profit is not as high or consistent as having your own product, and you have no real control over your revenue.

We have about 300 domains now and each one when we bought it at the time seemed to be a good idea. Only about 15 of them have “full” sites on them we have updated regularly. Yes you can probably move on and maintain this site but I suggest you continue to get traffic to that site and keep learning from it.

PPC Live Seminar

We just got back from LA the other day and I just want to give a review of the seminar we attended while at Las Vegas. It was the first seminar we attended for people who want and are making money online. There were about 10 speakers there during the 2 day seminar with Amit being the keynote speaker. Even though the name of the seminar is PPC Live, the seminar covered a lot more than PPC. And the target of the talks were for beginners to experts in the field of online affiliate marketing. Some of the high points of the seminar were meeting Amit in person, eating breakfast with him and the readers of his blog, getting some tips from a former Google employee, tips from Kirt Christensen and just seeing how serious some of these guys were with this kind of business . There were a lot of new tricks and techniques we picked up during the talks and are implementing them this week.

The low points of the seminar were the long winded sales pitches each speaker gave after their talks to up sell the attendees on basically hand-holding workshops to implement their techniques. One speaker’s sales pitch lasted over 20 Minutes with about 50 slides showing all the ebooks his limited package included. My brothers and I were about to walk out of there. No joke. His talk was very good up to that point. But he should have known that no one wants to be sold like that. I think he had the least up sells that day. Another downer that day was meeting people who bought all the up sells but were not making a dime on the internet and people who attend these types of seminars and buy all the latest affiliate tools on the market with no real results to report. I think they are just collectors. I just wanted to tell them that you don’t need to spend any money on all that stuff, and just ONE small action of doing what they learned is a lot more helpful.

Our older brother attended the seminar too and he liked it alot. He said he learned a lot and his conclusion was – “Now I just need to do it.” This is coming from our older bro who has a PHD in Electrical Engineering. We already helped him setup a few campaigns and he is showing progress. However, the real secret was forcing him to say what he really wanted. Without a strong REASON or why behind your actions to make money online, you will never really do it. Or always have some hesitancy.

Now, I want to  just end this post with one of the secrets I learned in achieving a 5 figure monthly income without adsense. And that is visualizing what I wanted. I remember about 2 years ago when my twin and I just had enough with the internet business. We had some ebooks we were selling on clickbank and were basically making about 500 bucks a month profit from them but the customer support and product developments were stressing us. It was too much work for that amount of profit. That day we told each other to just visualize checks coming in the mail. About 2 months later we got a lot more checks in the mail and we really never looked back.
